A first explicit new innovation in robot design is the open sourcing of robot-projects. To describe the extent of advancement of a robot, the time period "Generation Robots" can be used. This time period is coined by Professor Hans Moravec, Principal Research Scientist at the Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute in describing the close to future evolution of robotic technology. Our reference robot is provided with 9 infrared sensors—the newer model has eight infrared and 5 ultrasonic proximity sensors—arranged in a “skirt” in every course.
